Creating a (transparent) Table

We will create a transparent table that lists employees of a company.
• Click on the Database table button
• The cursor is in the text box
  • the table name must adhere to the customer defined name space.
  • we have to start the table name with the letter ZED or the letter Y
  • He types ZEMPLOYEES, he then clicks the Create button, and the screen changes

• This is where we place a description of the table
• He types Employees

• Under Short text is a bunch of tabs.
• He notes the "Delivery and Maintenance" tab.
• He selects the Delivery Class check box and then he selects a drop down button.

• Another screen is displayed titled "Delivery class" displaying a list of delivery options.

• He will choose "Application table", because the table will hold master and transaction data.

• Back in the "Dictionary: Maintain Table" screen, he selects the drop-down for the "Data Browser/Table View Maint." field
• [3:30] He chooses "Display/Maintenance Allowed" from the drop-down items.
  • This will allow us to later enter data directly into the table
• He clicks the Save button from the toolbar.

• After clicking the Save button, the "Create Object Directory Entry" screen is displayed.
• Any development we do within the SAP system, we do within the development environment, which we may move to QA when we're done, and then it goes to production.
  • This window allows us to choose the development class, which has configed behind it, the actual transport route that we want to use for our development.
  • For this example we do not want to move our work outside the development system.
  • So all we have to do is click the "Local object" button, "$TMP" will appear in the "Development class" field.
  • This means this object will only appear in our development environment.
• The "Create Object Directory Entry" vanishes and we see in the bottom status area that our table has been saved.

• [5:06] From the "Goto" menu item, he then selects "Object directory entry" from the sub-menu, the "Change Object Directory Entry" screen is displayed,
  • It looks just like the Create Object Directory Entry screen, we can see that the "Development class" is $TMP (dollar temp).
  • He closes that window by clicking the Close button towards the bottom of the screen.

First Field - CLIENT

• This is where we will start entering Field names.
• Field names can start with any letter, have a max of 16 characters,
  • tables must have at least one key field, all records must have a unique or no duplicates key fields
  • you can assign an initial value
• Data element defines specific attributes for each field.
  • they must adhere to the Customer Name Space
    • data elements must begin with either a Z or Y

• [7:14] first field will identify the client that our records are associated with
• Field: CLIENT
  • Data element: MANDT, after pressing Enter, SAP filled in teh Data type, length, number of decimals, short text
  • the client field should be a key field, so the speaker clicks the checkbox for Key.

Second Field - EMPLOYEE

• Field: EMPLOYEE
  • will make this a key field
  • Data element: ZEENUM
• Next he clicks the Save button from the toolbar
  • [8:42] the data element ZEENUM does not exist, so we have to create it.
  • There is a second toolbar that has a Check button, clicking it will display an error message

• We cannot activate this table and use it in the system until all errors are gone.
• Next the speaker clicks the Back button from the top toolbar
  • We will use forward navigation to create the data element
  • Another way to do it is to open up a new session by clicking the "Creates New Session" button from the top toolbar
  • That takes you to the "SAP Easy Access" screen with the SAP menu
  • [9:37] He uses the technical code of SE11 to open the "ABAP Dictionary: Initial Screen" and says: start creating the individual objects this way.
• But, we're not going to do it that way, we'll use forward navigation ...
  • You do this by double-clicking the new data element

• In the Short text field he types Employee Data Element
• Note that the "Data Type" tab has the focus,
  • we can see on this screen that the Elementary type called the Domain and needs to be defined
  • Domains must adhere to the Customer Name Space.
  • We will create a brand new domain using the same name as the data element, so we type ZEENUM
  • we will use forward navigation to create the domain by double-clicking the entry
  • a dialog box is displayed, we click Yes
  • The "Create Object Directory Entry" screen is displayed,
    • we want to use the $TMP development class,
    • we can either hit the Save button or click the "Local object" button.
    • Because we are using forward navigation, the "Create Domain" dialog screen is displayed telling us that the domain does not exist.
  • [11:59] click Yes, to create the domain, and the "Dictionary: Maintain Domain" screen is displayed
  • in the Short text field we will say what the domain is going to be used for.
    • he types Employee Domain
  • Below the Short text field are three tabs, with the "Definition" tab opened.
  • Within the Definition tab is the Data type text box
  • He clicks a drop-down for Data type and a window is displayed titled "Data type in ABAP Dictionary (1) 24 Entries found" with many data types.
  • He selects "NUMC   Character string with only digits"
  • After selecting that data type, NUMC is displayed as the data type in the Definition tab.
  • In the "No. characters" field (number of characters), he enters 8
  • In the "Decimal places" field, he enters 0 (zero)
  • In the "Output length" field, he enters 8
  • Then he hits the (ENTER) Key
  • He notes the description to the right of the "Data type" field which means it took.
